Families stand in rain to keep their place in line. By Fredi Schlagel.

On a rainy December day, umbrellas provided little shelter to families waiting in line to receive food from the Lord’s Lambs Ministry Food Pantry, an agency of the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Patiently, soaked and tired clients came in one by one to fill their boxes with food. They were greeted inside by Bruce and Lillian Spencer, who are both ready to guide them through the tractor-trailer full of food.

Child hunger can be a difficult thing to work on—it can pull on your heartstrings and make you feel as though you can’t possibly do enough. During this season of thanks, however, the simple and kind actions of children remind us to stay actively engaged in cycle of thanksgiving, wherever we fall: whether accepting help in times of need, providing help to others when we are able to offer it, or simply saying “thanks.” You never know how much that small gift of gratitude will mean.
