NY Times reports increase in free school lunch participation

Today, the New York Times reported there has been an increase in participation in free school lunch programs. Many of the new participants come from families that have been directly affected by the recession.

New Poverty Measure broadens understanding

The Census Bureau measures the number of Americans who live below the poverty threshold. This measurement has been around since 1969 and is based on income. There has been little change to how this number is measured since it was introduced.

Telling a child’s story of hunger

“When production began, my charge seemed a simple one: tell the most complete story possible about hunger in America, through the lens of four children. In reality, of course, the task is anything but simple; there were nearly 16 million stories from which to choose, 16 million children in America who don’t have consistent access to food.”
