Fighting Hunger… Feeding Hope. By Traci Simmons
September 20, 2011
The Child Hunger Corps is a national service program designed to increase the capacity and capability of food banks to execute programs targeted towards the alleviation of child hunger. The objective of the program is to increase the number of nutritious snacks and meals served to children in need in local communities across the country. The Child Hunger Corps initiative is sponsored by the ConAgra Foods Foundation.
In August 2011, the second cohort of 11 new Corps members were placed at Feeding America member food banks, bringing the current total to 17 Child Hunger Corps members working at food banks across the country. This post is by second cohort member Traci Simmons, Child Hunger Corps member at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.
My term as a Child Hunger Corps Member has already begun and is moving rather quickly. Things are off to a great and rather busy start. When I arrived in Oklahoma City, I was warmly welcomed, primarily by the heat, but most importantly by the people. Everyone has been extremely kind and helpful, which made settling into my food bank a smooth transition. I never thought that growing up on the east coast could be so different than life in the Midwest, but it is. Things from the landscape, the lingo, to even the pace of daily living are unique in its own way. One thing that remains constant despite your location is that “Hunger is Real.”
As many of you may know, September is Hunger Action Month. A few ways that the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma has been busy raising hunger awareness this month is through staff activities, volunteerism, and daily food distribution. Hearing the various stories of hunger within the state of Oklahoma makes my duties as a Child Hunger Corps Member so clear: Help Fight Hunger!
I am constantly uncovering more information about food insecurity, programs offered in my food bank’s distribution area, various child nutrition stats, and much more. There is so much to be learned and so many lives to help change. I am eager and dedicated to do my part in helping end hunger. The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma clearly states what our mission is, “Fighting Hunger…Feeding Hope.”
