“Circle of Protection” prays with the President
July 21, 2011
There is a group of religious leaders, including our friends David Beckman at Bread for the World and Tony Hall of the Alliance to End Hunger, who are part of the “Circle of Protection“, a nonpartisan movement committed to resisting budget cuts that undermine the lives, dignity, and rights of poor and vulnerable people. These leaders who are acting as the voice for our vulnerable population who do not have a powerful lobbying voice.
Yesterday, some members of the group met with President Obama to discuss and pray for the people affected by programs like WIC and SNAP (food stamps). You can see pictures of the leaders on Bread for the World’s blog. Their message urged Congress and President Obama to protect those programs from cuts—to form a “circle of protection” around them.
The group has also amassed 5,000 signatures of local pastors who believe that budget cuts are not just about fiscal responsibility, but also a moral responsibility.
I think this is an example of how hunger in the U.S. is not a problem solved by one person or one group. This is a collective issue that we all need to tackle together.
