Finding hope in Joplin

Rebekkah Lyman is helping Feeding America and Ozarks Food Harvest coordinate getting food to the people in need in Joplin. She is also a beacon of hope for the community and showed us around the area hit by the tornado. She was able to find hope and pride in all the destruction.

Joplin, Missouri food pantry visit

Joplin, Missouri has now become a household name in the US. This once modest town is now the topic of many people’s homes after an F-5 tornado ravaged through the town decimating more than 1800 acres.

New Chicago Mayor Emanuel seeks to eliminate food deserts

Rebuilding Alabama

May 13, 2011

Personally, I will always remember the few days I was able to spend in Alabama — not only for the destruction, but for the human kindness and strength that came through. In the aftermath, local Feeding America member food banks were able to do their jobs because of the citizens in their areas who really wanted to do right by their neighbors. Well-functioning emergency centers were erected in the course of one week. Agency directors were keeping in contact with their local food banks to relay the needs. Those who could help were working hard to make sure that survivors could get with they immediately needed.

Stamp Out Hunger is this weekend!

May 13, 2011

Tomorrow is the National Association of Letter Carriers annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive. This is the largest one-day food drive that occurs in the U.S and this is the 19th year. Last year, the 230,000 letter carriers collected 77 MILLION pounds of food.

Using Facebook to help out food banks

May 12, 2011

Nonprofits from across the country submitted videos about how a Toyota vehicle would help them do their work better. 500 finalists were selected including 14 Feeding America food banks. Each day, Toyota will feature 5 nonprofits on Facebook and the one that gets the most votes will win a vehicle for their program.
