School pantries…roll out! By Dorothy Mitchell

Last week was a fairly momentous one in the life of this young Child Hunger Corps member. For the first time in the “Program Implementation” phase of my work, I actually helped implement a program! Last week saw the launch of SIX (!) school pantries scattered throughout six different school districts in Portland and the neighboring city of Gresham. All of these pantries are new partner agencies, operated by staff from a non-profit that works in the schools.

Why did I fast?

This April’s rolling Hunger Fast seemed like such a great way to make a statement. The dramatic observance could be what the nation’s hungry needs to avoid federal cuts to safety-net programs.

Last Tuesday, as the clock moved closer to my start time, I was ready to participate. Wednesday came and I woke up hungry. I don’t usually wake up immediately hungry, but I think my head was playing with me, I knew I had a day ahead of me without food. With that knowledge, I became a little perturbed by the day ahead.
