Over the holidays, Walmart went to Facebook to let people decide where $1.5 million would be distributed. The campaign received many votes and people spoke up about where that money should go.

In the last few days, the House of Representatives and the President released their proposed funding cuts for the 2011 and 2012 federal budgets respectively. In addition to proposed cuts to nutrition programs beginning this year, the proposed cuts to other safety net programs will affect millions of low-income people, making it more difficult for them to feed themselves and their families.

Urban Ministries of Durham, a center that provides food shelter and clothing to North Carolinians, created a great game called Spent. It poses a simple question: if you were recently employed in a low-income job after months off of work, could your budget get you through the month? My funds took me to day 25.

A couple weeks back, I ran into Feeding America Entertainment Council member Ellie Krieger. I was fortunate enough to literally bump into Ellie, for it started a conversation about her participation in this blog post. And how timely, as this week marks the one year anniversary of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign, which aims to solve the problem of childhood obesity.

Here in Chicago, we have dug ourselves our and are back to our normal lives again.
While the storm was an inconvenience, The Chicago Tribune reports that some good came out of the blizzard – area restaurants donated food that would otherwise spoil to the Greater Chicago Food Depository, a Feeding America member food bank.

I was fortunate to go back to Minnesota and attend the sixth annual Vintner Ball event which benefits Second Harvest Heartland, the local Feeding America member food bank that serves the Twin Cities area.
