What a year it’s been in the fight against hunger as more Americans scrambled to stretch their budgets. Here at Feeding America, the Hunger in America 2010 study showed us that Americans were indeed reeling from the state of the nation, with 37 million individuals turning annually to our network of more than 200 food banks.

The great thing about giving is that it can come in a variety of forms. You can give with your hands, with gifts, or with your time. Each avenue opens up more opportunities for everyone to be involved in the giving process. Yet, no matter how a person decides to give, I believe it should always come from the heart.

My Christmas tree is quite possibly my favorite part of my day. Granted, I love my job, my friends, my apartment… but for the past three weeks, my little three-foot-tall tree has quite literally been “lighting” up my life and filling me with the kind of warm glow only a Christmas tree can bring. If I were to compare my experience in food banking thus far to a tree, I would say that it would be pretty quirky—perhaps something like Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree.

As part of The Biggest Loser Pound For Pound Challenge, Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo joined me at the Freestore Foodbank in Nick’s hometown of Cincinnati, OH, to volunteer and interact with some cooks-in-training. Cincinnati Cooks!, a program at the Freestore Food Bank, is a free ten-week program that prepares students, looking to improve their lives, for work in the food service industry.

This past weekend, the roof of the Metrodome collapsed due to heavy snowstorms in Minneapolis. After feeling far away from my family after this comparatively minor disaster, I was particularly excited to learn that the food that was prepared for last Sunday’s game was donated to local hunger-relief organizations.

Very soon, children across the country will begin their long holiday break from school. But for too many of them, being out of school will mean not getting enough to eat.
As Congress prepares to adjourn for the year and children prepare for the Christmas break, Feeding America urges the Senate to pass the Weekends Without Hunger Act. Congress shouldn’t leave for their holiday break before ensuring that no child goes hungry during theirs.

CNN examined the “new” face of hunger by interviewing the growing group of middle- and working-class individuals who are “food insecure,” which means they have difficulty feeding one or more of their household members at some point last year because of a lack of money.

For many children, the free or reduced-priced lunches that they receive at school are often the only regular meals they can count on.
The Weekend Without Hunger act, which would provide food to low-income children on weekends and holidays, passed in the House and is being sent to the Senate for consideration.

Infants, toddlers, and pre-schoolers: more than half of the 17 million American children who regularly face hunger are under the age 6.
To help support the food security of low-income families of young children, Sesame Workshop launched Food for Thought: Eating Well on a Budget today at a community event at the Capital Area Food Bank in Washington, DC, a member of the Feeding America network.
