Guest Post: The Battle Rages on… By Reggie Young

October 28, 2010

It’s amazing how much you can learn in such a short span of time. I’ve discovered so much here at the Houston Food Bank that I now dream of backpacks and food boxes! Much of my first month has been spent…

Guest Post: Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

October 27, 2010

As Hispanic Heritage Month came to a close on October 15, USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service held a special event for all of their employees nationwide to celebrate the history, culture and contributions of Americans whose ancestors hail from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. And while no celebration of Hispanic or Latino heritage would be complete without a sampling of delectable cultural foods and lively music and entertainment, this event was about so much more.

October 26, 2010

Most people agree that they want children in cafeterias to eat more nutritious food. But at this reporter in the New York Times states, “the food is only nutritious when a child actually eats the food.”

Hunger on TV and in pop culture

October 21, 2010

As you can tell from my last post, Blogger skips latte to donate 56 meals, I haven’t quite made it yet. Which is why, although I consider myself a fan, I currently don’t have TV. I do have an old TV set – it just isn’t hooked up to anything but a VCR…ok and also a Nintendo. For those of you who are like me, or perhaps just missed it, the issue of hunger has had a lot of exposure on TV and online this October. Here’s a quick download…

It’s National School Lunch Week

October 13, 2010

I loved eating the lunch provided by the school when I was a kid. I looked forward to those days when you had “Pizza Buns” or “Rosalie’s Suprise”. On hamburger day, I would always trade my dessert for someone’s burger. I never wanted to bring my lunch from home.

Today on Huffington Post–one in three Latino children faces hunger.

October 11, 2010

For weeks I’ve been writing about the need for a strong child nutrition bill to tackle our nation’s child hunger problem and provide better nutrition to the one in four children struggling with hunger. In the middle of National Hispanic Heritage Month, I am soberly reminded that child hunger is even more prevalent among Latino households – one in three Latino children is food insecure.

Guest post: “Karibu” to Salem! By Kim Shrader

October 6, 2010

For roughly half of the members of the Child Hunger Corps, this two-year hunger fighting adventure is a chance to pack our bags and undertake a brand new territory. For the other half, it’s a chance to take a second look at our home communities and make an impact where we are. I fall into the latter half. Being placed at Feeding America Southwest Virginia in Salem is part of a “full circle” experience that began several years ago.
