It’s Hunger Action Month! What are you going to do?

September 1, 2010

The kids are back in school and the summer heat has only slightly subsided. It’s business as usual for you.

For millions of Americans — more than 49 million to be precise — the day to day business of looking for a healthy meal continues. We can think about how sad food-insecurity is, but nothing will change until we take steadfast action. Today is a good day to start, as it is officially the beginning of Hunger Action Month.

Making a valuable contribution is easy. In fact, the Hunger Action Month website offers 30 different ways for you to make a difference over the next 30 days. Today I jumped ahead to the September 2 suggestion and posted a bit about Hunger Action Month on my Facebook profile. I also pledged to take on the September 12 “experience” action of spending a day living on the $4.45 daily average food stamp budget.

Actor David Arquette, our fearless Entertainment Council Chairperson, has pledged to volunteer at his local food bank (you can see his video below). Other national movers and shakers such as celebrity chefs Patrick and Gina Neely, American Idol winner Lee DeWyze, and the legendary football hero Joe Montana have all promised to do their part to end domestic hunger.

As you can see, making a huge difference in your community often starts with a small but crucial step — making a bold proclamation to do something. So (wo)man up right now! Record a promise, upload the video to YouTube, drop a link to it in the comment box below and share your Hunger Action Month pledge with the nation!

September is Hunger Action Month. Throughout the month, the Feeding America network of more than 200 food banks is asking you to take action through the “30 Ways in 30 Days” campaign. Whether it’s by advocating and raising awareness, making a donation or giving your time, find the way that’s right for you to make a difference in your community. On the blog this month we will feature a story each day about Hunger Action Month, our own 30 Ways in 30 Days.Visit the Hunger Action Month website for more information.Record your pledge, upload your video and post a link in the comments below.
