The national office answers the call after a disaster

August 26, 2010

Before the onset of Hurricane Katrina, Feeding America (then America’s Second Harvest) was often ready to respond to a national crisis, whether it was dealing with the victims of recessions or tending to the survivors of local flooding and tornadoes. It was the severity of Katrina that compelled both the network and national office to re-examine the readiness of member food banks to respond on a larger scale, and to prepare everyone involved in hunger-relief to respond to the unimaginable.

Mitzi Baum, the Director of Capability Development, and Stephanie Dragatsis, the Director of Compliance and Capability Assessment at Feeding America, share the stories of the days and weeks following Hurricane Katrina that eventually led to the  network’s redefinition of its disaster relief plan.
