Curtis Stone and Lindsay Price commemorate Hurricane Katrina disaster-relief
August 30, 2010
Celebrity chef Curtis Stone and actress Lindsay Price joined more than 150 volunteers last Friday at the Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana. With the help of local and state dignitaries, Stone – a Feeding America Entertainment Council member—and others in attendance packed disaster-relief boxes for distribution to other member food banks.
The event marked the five year observation of the work done by the Feeding America food bank network to help those who lost their loved ones, belongings and homes in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. In attendance were other supporters of disaster-relief efforts including Congressman Ahn “Joseph” Cao and Reverend Larry Snyder of the Catholic Charities USA. Before the packing event, Natalie Jayroe, the President and CEO of the Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana, recalled the state of the tragic event:
Almost 5 years ago, New Orleans and south Louisiana were devastated by a disasterous hurricane season. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita separated more than a million people from their homes, their families and a way of life unique in our country and the world. It is impossible in the short time we have here today to describe the tremendous suffering, the losses that were sustained, how tough the struggle was in the days and months following the storms to survive, to not lose all hope. Today we are here not to relive the tragedy but to celebrate the incredible spirit and resilience of our people and our determination to renew our community and rebuild it stronger than before.
Through their efforts, Stone and Price eagerly embraced the New Orleans spirit of renewal and community as they worked with others to sort through rows of shelf-stable goods. Not ones to fall-short in hunger-relief advocacy, the two also shared their plans for September’s Hunger Action Month.
