Client Story: Five years later, Barbara’s still getting things together

August 25, 2010

Outside New Orleans and Louisiana, the coastal regions of Mississippi and Alabama were also inundated with torrential rains and wind from Hurricane Katrina. Many of the people in these regions helplessly witnessed waters rising from the Gulf Coast to heights of 10 to 20 feet in only a matter of hours. Most of the beautiful beach front properties along I-10 weren’t raised high enough to avoid the flood and their wooden exteriors were ripped off in 120 mph winds. Even those that lived further inland were affected, as more than 200 people from Mississippi counties lost their lives.

Our Gulf Coast tour took us to Gulfport, Miss.’s Feed My Sheep, an agency of the Bay Area Food Bank. During the lunch service we met Barbara, a woman still trying to make things right five years after the storm.
