Guest Post: Pound for Pound Challenge raises more than 6 million pounds of food!

July 13, 2010

The Pound for Pound Challenge 2010 has come to a close. Our colleague Liz Monis, who attended the taping of  NBC’s ”The Biggest Loser” Food Bank Challenge and the season finale, shares with us just what this partnership has meant to our network.

Earlier this spring I had the chance to visit Asheville, NC to meet an incredible woman who had lost more than a hundred pounds. Struggling to take off the last 15, she decided to enroll in the Biggest Loser Pound for Pound Challenge. She believed that fighting for two causes – ending hunger and regaining her health – was just something she had to do.

This woman became one of the more than 200,000 Americans that pledged their support to the Pound for Pound Challenge in 2010. Together, everyone who enrolled pledged to lose more than 6 million pounds. For each pound pledged, one pound of food will be delivered to a local Feeding America member food bank.

The 2010 Pound for Pound challenge started in January, compelling people to use their New Year’s resolutions to make a difference in the lives of millions of Americans. Every week, NBC’s Biggest Loser audience tuned in to one minute informative segments about hunger in America. Participants could also head to the Pound for Pound site for up to the date information on healthy recipes, weight loss tips, and to see how they compared to other partakers across the country. Together, we nearly doubled the amount of weight lost – and food and pounds pledged – compared to last year’s launch.

A huger thanks to everyone who joined Feeding America and the Biggest Loser in the fight to end hunger while changing your lives!

Who is Liz? She’s the figure hiding behind Biggest Loser winner Michael Ventrella in the video below.
