Economic insecurity in the U.S.

July 27, 2010

You can’t seem to turn on the news or open the newspaper without everyone talking about the economy and how Americans are coping.

In today’s New York Times, Bob Herbert wrote an op-ed piece about a recent report for the Rockefeller Foundation. This report says that one in five American households is financially insecure. This is the highest rate in 25 years.

One of the most alarming statistics include that if a household experiences a 25% drop in income, it could take six to eight years to recover.

This is really true. In AZ, the recent Feeding America Child Food Insecurity report shows AZ as the third worst in the country, where 1 in 4 children are food insecure. The Kids Count report (http://datacenter.kidscount.org/) that was released today, gives us even more data showing how at risk this young generation is all across our nation. More reasons than ever to speak up to your member of Congress to pass the Child Nutrition Reauthorization bill languishing in their hands as we speak.
