Take action. Help millions of children in need.

April 29, 2010

In the next few months, Congress will make critical decisions about the programs that help provide food to children in need— known as the Child Nutrition Reauthorization.

Nutrition programs in this bill include the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), the Child and Adult Care Food Program, and the Summer Food Service Program–all of which provide food for millions of children from low-income families.

As Congress moves forward with Child Nutrition Reauthorization, a key part of the process remains identifying funding sources to meet President Obama’s proposal of securing $1 billion per year for child nutrition programs.

The current proposal in the Senate falls far short of this request.

The good news is that we are fortunate to have two long-time anti-hunger leaders, Representatives Jim McGovern (D-MA) and Jo Ann Emerson (R-MO), who have spearheaded an effort to educate their colleagues about Child Nutrition Reauthorization.

They are doing this by asking them to sign a “Dear Colleague” letter–a strategy used by members of Congress to show support for a particular issue– encouraging leaders in the House of Representatives to help secure the $1 billion per year funding level.  If enough of their colleagues sign on to the letter, it could spur key members into action.

To date, 186 Representatives have signed onto the McGovern-Emerson letter.
You can help too.

Contact your Representative in the House and encourage them to sign this important letter.  To contact your Representative, simply visit Feeding America’s Hunger Action Center and click “Call Your Elected Officials.”
